From the developers of System Shock 2 Comes BioShock. A Hybrid First Person Shooter. Does BioShock live up to the hype or does it sink to the bottom with Rapture?
GamePlay
BioShock is a hybrid game. It has your FPS aspect, Plus you have your Plasmids, You also have the ability to explore anywhere you want and go back to anyplace you been to already.
2k Boston made it clear that no two people will have the same experience which is true to some degree. Everyone will fight and use their plasmids differently when fighting. Theirs only so much you can do with the plasmids and Guns. You do have allot of choices when it comes to How do I take this AI down.
AI in this game is not typically attack you until you kill him/her or Hide behind the objects and try out gun you. AI will attack if you start to get the better of them, they will run to regroup and try to heal. Than try to attack you again using the same or new methods to take you down. AI also react like they should If you set them on fire they will run to the water to put the fire out. Each object if thrown at them will have a different reaction to it. A chair will knock them down where a mask will just stun them for a second.
AI will also react on how you play. If you run away from them they will give chase. They will also be careful at times to make sure your not setting up traps. AI will also play dead, Second you get near they will shoot. AI uses different methods to lure you in though out the game. You have to be on your toes at all times or you will end up dead.
Death part of the game is a bit weird. You go to these vita Chambers that are placed though out the city. You will re-spawn to closet chamber. Theirs no real penalty when you die. You can just pick up where you left off.
You are give access to seven weapons and a camera. You get your basic weapons, Pistol, shotgun, Machine Gun, Grenade Launcher, Crossbow, Chemical Thrower, and a Wrench. Only difference with these weapons are, First is they look like they were made out of objects found in a Kitchen supply store. Which gives them the feel like Rapture was suppose to be a peaceful place and not a place of war. They had to use whatever they can find to defend them selves. Second each weapon has three ammo types you can switch to. Some are good at taking down turrets, other ammo types many only be good at taking down splicers. Camera acts as your research tool. Take pictures of different Splicers, Big Daddy's, Little Sisters, etc.. You get access to more plasmids.
Other part of the gameplay is your gene alternation. These can vary from casting fire onto your enemies to slowing down the fluid when hacking. Their are 70 different types of plasmids, physical tonics, engineering tonics, and combat tonics. Their are six slots for each, You start out with only three and must buy more slots as you go though the game. Plasmids is the key to your survival. Each plasmids may have a different effects on the AI type. Some are immune to electro bolt. As you progress though the game you can buy more powerful forms of plasmids. Their are two upgrades for each Plasmids.
Their are three types of Currency in the game. Adam, Money, and Material. Adam can only be received by you save or harvest a Little Sister. Than Adam must be taken to Gatherer's Garden vending Machine. Which is spread though out the city. Second is Money you can spend your money on more ammo or more health packs at the two vending machines. The final Currency is Material. As you collect difference objects like glue, bolts, etc.. you can create your own plasmids, tonics, ammo types, or hacking tools at the U-Invent Machine.
Moral choice save and help or kill and destroy. If you want the Adam from the little Sister you must first take on the Big Daddy's. Which is no easy task, They are fast, strong and can take you out in a few shots. Once you do take the Big Daddy down you have a choice to harvest all the Adam from the Little sister and she will not survive or do you Save her and get a little bit of Adam. This is the choice the player has to make though out the game. If you do save the Little Sisters they will send you gifts though out the game as a thank you.
Story
Game starts by your plane crashing into the Atlantic Ocean by a light house. As you enter the light house and use the sub you soon find your self in a underwater city called Rapture. Things have gone to hell. You are aided by a man called Atlas who helps you though the game and tells you Andrew Ryan the man who created Rapture is responsible for everything that has gone wrong. Atlas ask you to help him save his family. So he may leave rapture once and for all with his family. As you journey though the game things are not what they seem to be.
Graphics
BioShock is one great looking game. Art style is unique and makes you believe that you are underworld in 1950's era.
Can't talk about BioShock Graphics's without talking about the water effect's. Water Effect are amazing. Water reacts like real water should. It makes you think and feel like you are actual in a under water city. As you go though the tunnels and you see the other city buildings and see other sea creatures pass though.
Only problem graphics has, is some times it takes a few seconds to render all the textures on a object. You will approach a health pack. You will only see the first layer of the textures. Few seconds later the other layers will pop up on the health pack. I only noticed this when I was playing the game for long periods of time.
Audio
BioShock has some amazing audio. Most noticeable is the voice acting from all the characters that you will interact with to the Dairies spread though the city. Audio Dairies have that distorted audio effect mixed into them. Which gives it a great addition to the audio files.
Sound is great from the water dripping from the celling to Big Daddy's moan. Everything in the city seems to have it's own unique sound to bring the city to life.
Weapons and Plasmid also sound great from reloading to firing your Gun or hitting someone with a Electro Bolt.
Overview
BioShock is one amazing game that you shouldn't pass up. If you can only buy few games this year. BioShock should be at the top. With amazing gameplay, graphics, and story telling. You will not be disappointed when you pick this game up.
